Lube is too damn expensive
Why I lube so damn expensive? I know I’m supposed to be answering this for you, but I still can’t quite figure it out. There’s simply no reason why a 2oz bottle of lube should sell for $10-$15 plus shipping.
I’m not even exaggerating with that pricing; that’s the real retail price of most 2oz bottles of lube and it’s absolutely ridiculous. Here’s a few for reference:
Swiss Navy Silicone = $14.95
Swiss Navy H20 = $9.95
JO H2O = $9.95
K-Y Jelly = $7.95
ID Glide = $9.95
Gun Oil H20 = $9.95
Boy Butter H20 = $9.95
Spunk Hybrid = $10.95
Boy Butter Original = $11.45
Liquid Silk (1.69oz) = $14.95
Sliquid has one of the least expensive 2oz sizes at $7.95, plus shipping and I still ain’t paying. If I can make a great value lube like The Butters and sell 2 oz tubs for $3, shipping included, Big Lubricant is clearly price gouging.
Being on the inside of the sex toy industry as a blogger and reviewer, I’ve asked manufacturers how they determine their pricing. While there’s a ton of reasons, the main ones are extreme amounts of business overhead costs and high profit margins. In an imaginary world where I’ve got stacks on stacks on stacks, l might pay these prices. Sadly, I don’t even have a singular stack so fuck that noise.
In the past, I’ve offered a ton of solutions from using water to extend basic water-based lubes like K-Y Jelly, to using Crisco or Vaseline. Truthfully, none of those work the way I want them to, but they are pretty decent options if that’s all you’ve got. Although, the best option would be for these other manufacturers to take a hint from The Butters and lower their pricing to something a bit more reasonable.
I make The Butters for specific uses in my sex life and I know it won’t be perfect for everyone. For example, It’s not safe to use with latex condoms, which means a ton of people won’t be able to use it for intercourse. So, there has to be other options for people out there. Sadly, there just isn’t right now. Well, at least until I figure out how to make something water-based.
If The Butters isn’t for you, you might want to check out CheapLubes.com for more options. If the only problem is its compatibility with latex condoms, there’s lots of options for that. You might want to check out Lucky Bloke’s selection of non-latex condoms. Also, if you do happen to find a comparably priced lubricant that’s water-based, I’d love to know: jerome@ltasex.info
