Gay porn actor Erik Rhodes death, a lesson

On June 14, gay porn star Erik Rhodes, born James Elliott Naughtin, was found dead. The circumstances of his death are unclear but initial reports suggest he died in his sleep of a heart attack. He was 30 at the time of his death.

Rhodes had a well-documented, long term relationship with drugs, depression and steroids. The popular theory is that Rhodes’ steroid use lead to his ultimate demise. While that is yet unclear, according to a post on his popular Tumblr blog on June 10, he may have known something was going on.

A fan with the username Kennethbeltran asked to actor, “am about to start a roid cycle. any suggestion for a gear? i want to be as huge as you.”

To which, Rhodes responded, “My cycle right now… 3000 mg of Test Enanthate a week, 2500 mg of Nandrolone Decaonate and 300 mg of Trenbolone Acetate. With 5iu of Human Growth Hormone everyday.”

He then added, “I’m waiting until i pop. Or my liver to fails… which every comes first.”

Erik Rhodes’ story, while tragic, is one that is quite common. This is especially true for gay men. In the gay community, depression, drug abuse and steroid use are somewhat common.

There is a lot of pressure on gay men to be the perfect ideal of masculinity that is sold to us in all of our media. It’s comparable to the pressures many women feel to be physically fit. The stresses can become too much.

For Rhodes, the pressure had gotten to him a long time ago. He used his Tumblr blog “A Romance with Misery” as an outlet for his demons. It’s unfortunate that he didn’t get a chance to expel them before they took his life. But if the title of his blog is any indication, he may not have wanted that to happen.

If you know someone taking steroids, drugs or dealing with depression, don’t hesitate to help them. I know that it can be difficult and trying but it’s worth the effort. Most of the time, all people need is an outlet. If you can be that outlet, then you might be able to save their lives.
